About
Award-winning comedian Al Murray embarks on a journey to discover the real Germany in a short series for BBC FOUR. Al’s odyssey, through one of the country’s coldest winters on record, unearths two centuries of stunning arts and culture which, undoubtedly, have profoundly influenced the Britain we know today.
From Bach to Bauhaus and the Brothers Grimm, Al explores the history, arts, popular culture and natural beauty of the much maligned country. Like Basil Fawlty he purposely avoids all mention of the war and instead embarks on an exhaustive tour, from Heiligendamm in the North to Munich in the South, to reveal Germany’s 18th and 19th century Golden Age: an age of fairy tales, poetic writers, radical thinkers, avant-garde theatre, breathtaking architecture and the world’s first seaside resort, from which our culture has begged, borrowed and stolen.
